Obituary for Jeremiah Sarratt

Jeremiah Sarratt, a pioneer of the county, passed away at his home in Elkhorn Township at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon, November 28, after a lingering illness, principally the result of old age. Jeremiah Sarratt was born in Davidson County, N.C., June 24, 1824. In 1836 he came with his parents to Brown County, this state, which has since been his home. He was married to Martha Bell about the year 1834 1 and to them were born five children, one son died at the age of age, while three sons and one daughter remain to mourn his death. The surviving children are: Charles and Amos W. Sarratt, who reside near Hebron, Nebraska; Lemuel M. Sarratt, who at present is supervisor from Elkhorn Township; and Mrs. Henry Moore, who also lives in Elkhorn, near Jacques Mill. Mr. Sarratt was a modest man, a model farmer and good citizen, although he had no political aspirations. His brother, Daniel, was Sheriff of this county in the early fifties. He embraced the faith of the Latter Day Saints at the time Nauvoo was Mormon headquarters and remained a disciple of that belief until death, although he never indorsed (sic) the polygamous doctrines practiced by them after their exile from Nauvoo. His faithful wife died May 21 of this year. His remains were interred in Marden Cemetery Saturday afternoon and his funeral services will be held upon arrival of some of the elders of the Mormon Church in this community. (end)
